Als telt niet in de Formule 1, die harde les heeft Felipe Massa vandaag geleerd in Singapore. ,,We hadden de snelheid om te winnen”, constateert hij na afloop. De feiten vertellen echter een ander verhaal. Dankzij een mislukte pitstop staat Massa met lege handen. De Ferrari-coureur begon goed aan de race in Singapore. Bij de start wist hij de koppositie te behouden en zijn voorsprong op achtervolger Lewis Hamilton groeide naar een seconde of vijf. Geen vuiltje aan de lucht... Totdat de safetycar in ronde zeventien plotseling ter tonele verscheen. Nelsinho Piquet had zijn Renault in de muur geparkeerd en dat leidde tot chaos in de pitstraat. Chaos waarin Ferrari het hoofd niet koel wist te houden. Massa kreeg het sein om weg te rijden terwijl de benzineslang nog aan zijn Ferrari was gekoppeld. De fout werd nog snel hersteld, maar toen was het al te laat. De Braziliaan moest aan het eind van de pitstraat enige tijd wachten totdat de slang werd los gekoppeld. Daarna kon hij zijn weg pas vervolgen – op weg naar de dertiende positie. ,,We hebben vandaag zes punten weggegooid en staan er in het WK nu zeven achter. Zonde, want wij hadden juist de koppositie kunnen pakken. Ons tempo was geweldig. Ook Kimi (Raikkonen, red.) reed goede rondetijden dus we hadden een dubbelzege kunnen scoren. Gelukkig zijn er nog dertig punten te verdelen en is er nog niets verloren.” Massa wilde niet te zwaar aan de fout van zijn team tillen. ,,Waar mensen werken, worden fouten gemaakt. Dat kan gebeuren. Boos zijn heeft geen zin. Ik heb met de beste man die de fout maakte gesproken en gezegd dat ik hem niks kwalijk neem.” Het is niet de eerste keer dat Ferrari tegen dit probleem aanloopt. De Scuderia maakt geen gebruik meer van een lollipop-man, maar van een lichtsysteem dat vanaf de pitmuur wordt beheerd. In Valencia ging het al eens fout tijdens een pitstop van Raikkonen. Massa: ,,We zouden weer een lollipop-man kunnen neerzetten, maar met het systeem was vandaag niks mis. Er was sprake van een menselijke fout. Het licht werd op groen gezet dus ging ik er vandoor.
