 Het zijn onzekere tijden voor Nelson Piquet junior. De coureur weet niet of hij bij Renault kan blijven. Bovendien heeft Piquet nu zelf toegegeven dat Renault het liefst een Fransman wil hebben. En zo kan het dat Romain Grosjean ineens een goede kanshebber is geworden. De positie van Piquet binnen Renault is gezien zijn veelal matige prestaties dit jaar al langere tijd onzeker. Behalve dat Renault nog niet overtuigd is van zijn capaciteiten, hangt veel ook af van Fernando Alonso's beslissing of hij wel of niet bij de Franse renstal blijft. Dat is dan ook de prioriteit van Renault en ondertussen moet Piquet afwachten. Lucas di Grassi leek de belangrijkste kandidaat om het plekje van zijn landgenoot in te nemen, aangezien hij onderdeel uitmaakt van het Renault rijdersprogramma en een goed GP2 Series-seizoen kende. Maar nu lijkt er binnen Renault toch de wens te zijn ontstaan een Franse coureur aan te stellen. En zodoende is Romain Grosjean meer in beeld bij het team dan voorheen. Ook Grosjean test vor Renault en reed dit seizoen in de GP2 Series. Piquet geeft toe dat hij van Grosjean te vrezen heeft. ,,Het is alweer een tijdje geleden dat er een Fransman bij Renault reed. Ik denk dat ze op zoek zijn", zegt Piquet in gesprek met persbureau Reuters. Of Renault al een besluit heeft genomen, dat weet de Braziliaan niet, beweert hij. Hem is nog niets verteld. Mocht Piquet inderdaad vervangen worden, dan zou hij nog een kans maken bij Honda. Dat team krijgt volgend jaar het Braziliaanse Petrobras als grote sponsor erbij. En Petrobras zou uit zijn op een jonge Braziliaanse coureur bij Honda. ,,Er zijn altijd gesprekken. Paddocks zijn niet groot en iedereen weet van elkaar wat hij aan het doen is. Maar uiteindelijk ben je toch aan het wachten op de beslissing van iemand anders", aldus Piquet. |
