 Lewis Hamilton lijkt de wereldtitel in de slotfase van de Braziliaanse Grand Prix te verspelen, maar door Timo Glock in de laatste bocht in te halen wordt hij alsnog kampioen. Felipe Massa juicht tien seconden te vroeg. Door op zeker te spelen en zich niet te mengen in het gedrang om de koppositie, hoopt Hamilton relatief simpel de titel veilig te stellen. Dat lukt, maar de uitslag vertelt in dit geval niet het complete verhaal. Zo'n acht minuten voor het einde van de race in Interlagos begint het zachtjes te regenen. De motregen wordt snel heviger en stuk voor stuk besluiten de coureurs hun slicks om te wisselen in intermediates. Iedereen behalve Timo Glock. Na de pitstops behoudt Felipe Massa de leiding en ligt Hamilton nog steeds vijfde. Tot zover niks aan de hand. Het begint echter steeds harder te regenen en Robert Kubica bemoeit zich met het gevecht tussen Hamilton en Sebastian Vettel. De Pool rijdt in de weg en Vettel profiteert. Hamilton ligt daardoor in de laatste ronde ineens zesde en lijkt alsnog naast het WK te grijpen. Terwijl de Brit de laatste sector rondt, grijpt Massa de overwinning. Hij gaat uit zijn dak en met hem de honderdduizend fans op de tribunes. Ook in de pitbox bij Ferrari is het feest. Maar dan ineens juicht ook McLaren. Twee teams vieren feest omdat de titel binnen is. Wat is het geval? De regen zet door en Glock blijkt verkeerd te gokken. Zijn laatste ronde is uiterst langzaam en Hamilton passeert hem in de laatste bocht. Alsnog finisht de McLaren-coureur op de benodigde vijfde positie en kroont hij zich kampioen. Massa huilt verderop niet van vreugde, maar verdriet. |
