 Bernie Ecclestone wil het huidige puntensysteem vervangen door een systeem met medailles. En dat is niet zomaar een losse flodder van de F1-baas: hij denkt het plannetje volgend seizoen al in de praktijk te kunnen brengen. Het idee is simpel: de winnaar van een race krijgt een gouden plak, de nummers twee en drie verdelen het zilveren en bronzen eremetaal. Vanaf plaats vier staat iedereen met lege handen, al tellen de klasseringen wel mee voor je plaats in het coureurs-WK. Degene met het meeste goud mag zich aan het einde van het seizoen rijk rekenen. In het constructeurskampioenschap zou het huidige puntensysteem wel blijven bestaan. Ecclestone deed zijn plan tegenover The Times uit de doeken. ,,Iedereen snapt een systeem met medailles. Bijna alle sporten werken op zo’n manier. Waar het allemaal om gaat, is dat de mannen naar Melbourne gaan voor de eerste race omdat ze daar weer willen vertrekken met een gouden medaille, en niet met tien, acht of zes punten.” Volgens de Brit liet met name de seizoensafsluiter in Brazilië dit jaar zien dat de Formule 1 hard aan medailles toe is. ,,Hamilton hoefde alleen maar als vijfde te eindigen om de titel te pakken, hij hoefde niet te winnen. Dit (werken met medailles, JK) zal inhalen bevorderen.” Het nieuwe systeem wordt in december besproken door de FIA en de World Motor Sport Council, maar Ecclestone toonde zich behoorlijk zeker van zijn zaak. ,,De FIA en alle teams staan erachter, dit zal doorgevoerd worden.” |
