 Honda heeft zijn modellengamma voor komend modeljaar lichtjes opgeschud. De Civic heeft subtiele innerlijke en uiterlijke retouches gekregen. Daarbij is de Hybrid niet overgeslagen, want Honda wenst z’n imago in de toekomst verder te ’vergroenen’. De belangrijkste technische vernieuwingen bij de gewone Civic zijn de tot 100 pk opgekrikte 1,4-litermotor en de toepassing van VSA alle versies. Verder debuteert de Accord 2.2 i-DTEC met automatische transmissie.  Van een revolutie is bij de Civic voor modeljaar 2009 beslist geen sprake; eerder van een voorzichtige evolutie. Je moet je ogen goed de kost geven om de nieuwe van de vorige Civic te onderscheiden. Begrijpelijk, want het model behoeft met zijn futuristische trekken op dit moment nauwelijks wijzigingen om een gedateerd uiterlijk te voorkomen. Van buiten heeft de driedeurs Civic, de Type S, nu meer overeenkomsten met de brulboei van het gamma, de Type R. De grille en de achterlichtunits van beide auto’s zijn nu identiek. Andere overeenkomsten tussen de Type S en R zijn de in carrosseriekleur gespoten skirts en wielkasten. In het interieur van de Type S treffen we deels met alcantara overtrokken zitmeubilair.  In de cockpit heeft de Civic nu ook een bandenspanningsmeter en een aansluiting voor externe audio-apparatuur ondergebracht. Verder word je voortaan door een schakelindicator op het dashboard erop gewezen wanneer je een andere versnelling moet kiezen. Aan het instrumentarium heeft Honda ook geschaafd. De zijkanten die door reflecties in het transparante voorzetplastic soms slecht zichtbaar waren, zijn nu afgedekt door mat plexiglas. Net als de Jazz heeft de Civic een achterbank met zittingen die omhoog geklapt kunnen worden als bioscoopstoelen, waardoor je voor de achterbank een soort tweede bagageruimte creëert zodat je je kerstboom zo door het achterportier naar binnen schuift. De bank kan ook eenvoudig worden neergeklapt; de Civic heeft dan een volledig vlakke laadvloer. De vijfdeurs Civic profiteert van dezelfde innerlijke wijzigingen als de driedeurs. Aan de buitenzijde onderscheidt de laatste zich van de eerste door een anders geboetseerde grille. De lichtbalk tussen de koplampen die voorheen doorliep, is nu onderbroken door kleine luchtinlaten. MoeiteTechnisch is er ook één en ander veranderd. Alle uitvoeringen van de Civic hebben een zesversnellingsbak; met genoemde schakelindicator. Een doorontwikkelde versie van de automatische i-Shift-transmissie (met geautomatiseerde koppeling), die je op de 1,4-literversie kunt krijgen, zorgt voor kortere schakeltijden. Deze veertienhonderd heeft net als de grotere benzinemotor, de 140 pk sterke 1,8-liter, Honda’s variabele kleptimingsysteem. De 1,4-liter hoestte 83 pk op, maar ontwikkelt in de gefacelifte Civic 100 pk. Deze motor, die debuteerde in de Jazz, verbruikt 5,9 liter brandstof per 100 kilometer en houdt de Civic wegens z’n uitstoot aan emissies binnen de grenzen die de overheid heeft gesteld om in aanmerking te komen voor het bijtellingstarief van 20 procent. Met de 1,4-liter in het vooronder is de Civic overigens maar net adequaat bediend. De motor is weliswaar behoorlijk stil, maar het kost ’m moeite de gang in de Civic te krijgen en te houden. Veel schakelen is noodzakelijk om vlot met het overige verkeer mee te bewegen. De 1,8-liter is, hoewel je met deze motorisering als zakelijke rijder in een hogere bijtellingsschaal valt, het betere alternatief voor wie een dynamischer rijdende auto op prijs stelt. En, laten we eerlijk zijn, dat is toch iets waarop Honda zich voorstaat, sportief getinte auto’s. Voor wie wil dieselen, behoudt Honda de 140 pk sterke 2.2i-CTDi in het gamma.  Als groene fabrikant In de toekomst wil Honda zich echter ook profileren als dé producent van schone auto’s, als ’groene’ fabrikant. De Japanners hebben het voornemen om het gamma aan hybrides fors uit te breiden. Voor volgend jaar staan de Insight en de CRZ op het programma, terwijl een hybride Jazz voor 2010 begroot is. Maar alle hybride-minnende automobilisten aan zich binden zal voor Honda niet makkelijk zijn; het vindt namelijk Toyota op z’n pad met de Prius, een model dat in één adem genoemd wordt met hybride aandrijfsystemen. Toyota wordt hierdoor meer geassocieerd met hybride auto’s, maar met de vernieuwde Civic Hybrid die de weg moet bereiden voor de Insight, de CRZ en de hybride Jazz zet Honda wederom een stap op weg naar het groene imago dat het zich wenst. In 1999 sloeg Honda die weg al in met de eerste generatie Insight, de voorloper van de Civic Hybrid, die in 2005 het levenslicht zag. Sindsdien spelen In Nederland de Honda Civic Hybrid en de Toyota Prius haasje over in de verkoopstatistieken. Honda heeft de facelift van de Civic aangegrepen om ook de Hybrid subtiel op te waarderen, zodat hij weer fris de strijd aankan met z’n landgenoot en enig ware concurrent. We zien een opnieuw vormgegeven voorbumper met een agressievere uitstraling, anders gesneden koplampen en achterlichtunits met een gewijzigde vorm. De wat tuttig ogende, dichte wielen hebben plaatsgemaakt voor sportievere vijf-of zesspaakswielen, wat de accessoire-afdeling van Honda ongetwijfeld minder vrolijk stemt.  Onderhuids is er weinig veranderd. Het hart van de Civic Hybrid wordt nog altijd gevormd door een 95 pk sterke 1,3-litermotor. Tussen deze benzinekrachtbron en de versnellingsbak zit een elektromotor van 20 pk. Elektronica regelt wanneer de tweede met de eerste moet meesteppen. Tijdens het remmen werkt de elektromotor als een dynamo en laadt hij het accupakket achterin op. Op een display naast de snelheidsmeter kun je volgen wat er onder de motorkap gebeurt. De Civic Hybrid komt nog altijd prima met het verkeer mee, ervaren we wanneer we achter het stuur stappen. Alleen bij ineens vol gas geven, aarzelt de auto even. Wel zorgt de traploze automaat voor behoorlijk wat geloei vanuit het vooronder als je de Civic de sporen geeft. Honda heeft er wel aan gesleuteld en de transmissie een groter aantal overbrengingen gegeven om aan de ene kant de acceleratie te verbeteren en aan de andere kant de toerentallen bij hogere snelheden te verlagen, maar als je haast hebt, zorgt-ie nog altijd voor de nodige herrie in het interieur. Het onderstel is strak, maar niet oncomfortabel. Het doet geen afbreuk aan de goede naam die Honda op dit gebied heeft. De stuurinrichting werkt prettig direct en het goed in de hand liggende stuurtje verleent voldoende info over wat er onder de voorwielen gebeurt. Net als de overige Civics heeft de Hybrid het VSA-stabiliteitssysteem aan boord, een elektronische beschermengel die de auto helpt op de weg te houden in kritische situaties. De vernieuwde Civics zijn per direct te koop. |
