 De grootste onduidelijkheid die er momenteel heerst in de Formule 1 is de legaliteit van de diffusers die gebruikt worden door Brawn, Williams en Toyota. Deze drie teams hebben met hun diffuser een groot voordeel ten opzichte van de overige teams, maar die beweren dat het concept illegaal is. Door de FIA-stewards werd het echter legaal verklaard en daarom zijn de teams in hoger beroep gegaan. Op 14 april wordt hieromtrent een uitspraak gedaan. Vorige week liet Briatore al weten het gedrag van Brawn binnen de FOTA te hekelen. Volgens Briatore had Brawn als technische man van de FOTA openlijk overleg moeten plegen en moeten zeggen dat er twee interpretaties van de diffuser zouden zijn. Brawn slaat nu echter terug, want tegenover persbureau Reuters laat de Brit weten nieuwe regels voor de diffuser te hebben voorgesteld. “Als ik slim was zou ik niet zeggen: ‘Kijk, we gaan deze diffuser gebruiken als je mijn regels niet accepteert’, want ik ga natuurlijk niet zeggen waar we mee bezig zijn”, liet Brawn optekenen. “Maar ik legde uit dat we naar mijn mening andere regels moesten opstellen om zaken die veranderd moesten worden te vereenvoudigen.” “De regels die ik voorgesteld heb zouden aan een hoop zaken een einde gemaakt hebben. Het zou een einde gemaakt hebben aan de oproer omtrent de diffusers, de bargeboards aan de voorkant en het zou de auto’s verder hebben verschoond. Ik heb deze regels voorgesteld, maar ze werden geweigerd. Dus dat betekent dat ik niks aan mijn kerfstok heb”, aldus de Brit. “Toen was niemand geïnteresseerd, maar nu wil ineens iedereen er meer van weten.” Tot slot laat Brawn weten een balans te moeten vinden tussen zijn rol als de technische man van zijn team en als hoofd van de technische afdeling van de FOTA: “Ik zeg wel dat ik werk met twee verschillende petten”, vertelt Brawn. “Als ik de ene pet op heb kijk ik wat goed is voor de Formule 1, die pet draag ik dan een tijdje. Maar als ik na een tijdje de ene pet vervang voor de andere pet, ga ik me afvragen wat het beste is voor mijn eigen team. En als je bezig bent met het ontwerpen van je auto, kan je niet teruggaan en zeggen: ‘Kijk, ik heb dit en dat gevonden!’, want dan zou ik er beter mee kunnen stoppen”, aldus de kersverse teameigenaar. |
