Nico Rosberg is de snelste coureur tijdens de tweede vrije training op het circuit van Sakhir in Bahrein. Rosberg zette na een uur trainen de snelste tijd op de klokken, een tijd waar de rest zich op stuk beet. In het kamp van Ferrari zal er vannacht hard gewerkt worden om de auto beter te maken. Met een veertiende en zeventiende tijd zal het thuisfront in Maranello alles behalve blij zijn. In het eerste half uur is het voornamelijk positiewisselingen van de coureurs onderling. Toyota heeft op dat moment de touwtjes steving in handen. Beide heren van Toyota voeren samen de lijst aan. Jenson Button probeert het gat wel te dichten, maar komt voorlopig op plek vier terecht. De Brit moet bijna een seconde toegeven op de tot dan toe ongenaakbare Trulli. Het wordt Sebastian Vettel die als eerste de twee Toyota-coureurs van elkaar weet te scheiden. Red Bull Racing lijkt dus ook in Bahrein weer de juiste snelheid te hebben gevonden. Die snelheid is nog niet aanwezig bij Renault. Nelson Piquet en Fernando Alonso sluiten na vijftig minuten trainen de ranglijst. Piquet weet zich wegens een uitstapje ook niet te verbeteren. Het zijn schaarse ‘hoogtepunten’ in deze sessie. De Ferrari’s staan nog niet hoog genoteerd. Dertiende en veertiende staan de Ferrari’s na zeventig minuten trainen, veel beweging zit er ook niet in de positiewisseling. Ook McLaren laat zich in de tweede training niet echt van voren zien. Hamilton staat nog wel tiende, Kovalainen zestiende. Dan komt er ineens actie op het Bahreinse asfalt. De tijd van Trulli blijkt wel te kloppen te zijn, aangezien Nico Rosberg er onderdoor duikt. De Williams-coureur, die het dit jaar in trainingen steeds goed doet, pakt de snelste tijd af van Trulli. Piquet weet zich ondertussen ook te verbeteren en verlaat de enalaatste stek. Alonso staat dan laatste, maar volgt het voorbeeld van zijn teamgenoot al snel. Sterker nog, de Spanjaard duikt zelfs naar de vierde tijd toe en maakt een reuzenstap op de lijst. Daardoor schuiven de bolides van BMW-Sauber door naar de onderste regionen. Langzaam maar zeker zakken ook de bolides van BrawnGP verder naar beneden. De snelheid van de afgelopen races laat in Bahrein nog even op zich wachten. Onderaan staan tien minuten voor tijd beide Finnen; Kovalainen en Räikkönen. Heidfeld en Kubica hebben zich weten te verbeteren en geven zodoende het stokje over aan beide Finnen als hekkensluiter. Deze blijven niet lang onderaan staan, want beiden verbeteren zich iets. Rosberg blijft bovenaan staan, voor Alonso en Trulli. De McLarens reden ondertussen hun rondjes en worden elfde en negentiende. Ook hier zal nog een hoop werk te verrichten zijn. De heren van Force India deden ook hun plicht. Giancarlo Fisichella wordt twaalfde, terwijl teamgenoot Adrian Sutil een keurige zevende plek bemachtigd.
